Campsites, facilities: There are 22 primitive sites for tents
or RVs up to 26 feet long and trailers up to 18 feet long. There is one
group camp available. Picnic tables, fire rings, and piped water are provided.
Pit toilets are available. Leashed pets are permitted.
Reservations, fees: No reservations; $7-$12 per night, $1 pet
fee.

Operating hours, seasons: The park is open year-round.
Directions: Take US 101 south to 156. From Highway 156 in San
Juan Bautista, turn south on San Juan Canyon Road and drive 11 miles to
the park.
Weather, clothing: The weather can be changeable; layered clothing
is advised.
Trip notes: Fremont Peak State Park (elevation 3,169 feet) features
expansive views of the Monterey Bay from its hiking trails in the grasslands
of the higher peaks of the Gavilan Range. Other views include the San Benito
Valley, Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountains east of Big Sur.
The park also features an astronomical observatory which is open for public
programs on specified Saturdays. Pine and oak woodlands in the park are
home to many birds and small animals. There are picnic facilities in the
park. Most vacationers in this region are heading to Monterey Bay and the
surrounding environs. That's why Fremont Peak State Park is missed by a
lot of folks. It is located on a ridge with great views of Monterey Bay
available on the trail going up Fremont Peak.
