Trip notes: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has 800 acres of redwoods,
conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows - plus
open meadows. Wild includes wild boars, raccoons, skunks, and birds, such
as water ouzels and belted kingfishers. Hikers can enjoy the many scenic
loops, including a self-guided nature loop. Overlooks provide spectacular
views of the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur Gorge. Campsites are along the
Big Sur River. The Big Lodge operates room and cabin accommodations. This
is one of the most popular state parks in California, and it's easy to
see why. You can have it all: fantastic coastal vistas (Highway 1), redwood
forests and waterfalls (Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park), expansive beaches
with sea otters playing on the edge of kelp beds (Andrew Molera State Park),
great restaurants (Nepenthe, Ventana Inn), and private, patrolled sites.
Reservations are a necessity.
