Tahoe State Recreation Area

Location: County: Placer. Nearest City: Tahoe City.

Campsites, facilities: There are 38 sites for tents or RVs up to 24 feet long. Piped water, coin-operated showers, flush toilets, picnic tables, and fire grills are provided. Firewood, other supplies, and a Laundromat are available within walking distance. Leashed pets are permitted.

Reservations, fees: Reserve by phoning 1-800-444-PARK/7275 ($7.50 reservation fee); $14-$16 per night, $5 for each additional vehicle, $1 pet fee. First come-First served early-September through late-September. First come-First served early-May through late-May. Reservations are available for late-May through early-September. Closed to camping October 1 to April 30.

Park Kiosk Hours:

    • Hi Season: 8am-9pm
    • Lo Season: Closed

Directions: From Truckee, drive south on Highway 89 through Tahoe City. Turn north on Highway 28 and drive to the campground entrance on the left side of the road.

Weather, clothing: The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended.

Trip notes: This is a popular summer-only campground at the northwest side of Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe State Recreation Area covers a large area just west of Highway 28 near Tahoe City, with the opportunity for hiking and horseback riding. A boat ramp is located two miles to the northwest at nearby Lake Forest, and bike rentals are available in Tahoe City for rides along Highway 89 near the shore of the lake.
